What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus is the brand name for oral semaglutide, a tablet form of the GLP-1 receptor agonist. It contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic (injection) but is taken by mouth. It is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes management.

Why Is Oral Semaglutide Special?

Peptides typically can’t be taken orally because stomach acid and digestive enzymes destroy them. Rybelsus solves this through a special formulation:

SNAC Technology

Each tablet contains SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate), which:

  • Protects semaglutide from stomach acid
  • Enhances absorption through the stomach lining
  • Allows roughly 1% of the peptide to reach the bloodstream

Important Requirements

Rybelsus has strict dosing requirements for absorption:

  • Take on an empty stomach (first thing in morning)
  • Swallow with no more than 4 oz of plain water
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications
  • Do not split, crush, or chew tablets

Research and Evidence

Rybelsus was tested in the PIONEER clinical trial program:

  • Multiple Phase III trials with thousands of patients
