What the evidence actually compares
Liraglutide activates GLP-1 receptors. Mazdutide activates GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. A mechanistic difference does not establish a clinical advantage.
Liraglutide has mature product-specific trial and regulatory evidence. The LEADER cardiovascular-outcomes trial studied liraglutide in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk; that is a distinct endpoint and population from mazdutide’s cited GLORY weight trials. Saxenda’s US weight-management indication and Victoza’s US type 2 diabetes uses belong to separate labels, rather than to every liraglutide preparation. LEADER, PMID 27295427 · FDA Saxenda label · Victoza label
Mazdutide is a GLP-1/glucagon receptor dual agonist. Its published GLORY-1 and GLORY-2 weight trials enrolled Chinese adults; GLORY-2 included some adults with type 2 diabetes, whereas the separate US phase 2 trial enrolled adults without it. The trials used different follow-up and analysis methods. GLORY-1 · GLORY-2 · US phase 2
Innovent reports Chinese NMPA approvals for specified adult weight-management and type 2 diabetes uses. The reviewed source is a sponsor exchange filing, not an independently retrieved Chinese label. No US FDA mazdutide approval was verified; an FDA letter identifies one US seller’s mazdutide products as unapproved new drugs.
| Evidence question | Liraglutide | Mazdutide |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Liraglutide activates GLP-1 receptors. Mazdutide activates GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. A mechanistic difference does not establish a clinical advantage. | GLP-1/glucagon receptor dual agonist |
| Cited human weight evidence | Labeled Saxenda weight evidence and separate LEADER cardiovascular outcomes | Published GLORY phase 3 studies in Chinese adults; separate US phase 2 study |
| US status in reviewed sources | FDA-approved Saxenda and Victoza products, for different labeled uses | No FDA approval verified |
| China status in reviewed sources | No jurisdiction-specific conclusion from cited Liraglutide sources | Innovent reports specified adult weight and diabetes approvals |
What cannot be inferred
No cited randomized trial directly compares liraglutide with mazdutide. Their weight, diabetes and cardiovascular studies ask different questions; a publication count or percentage from dissimilar trials is not a treatment ranking.
US FDA approval is verified for the labeled Saxenda and Victoza products and their respective indications. No FDA mazdutide approval was verified; Innovent reports specified Chinese mazdutide approvals. The source for the Liraglutide evidence above is this primary record; regulatory claims about mazdutide are supported by the linked sponsor filing and FDA letter. No combination-use claim follows from these separate studies.
